In 1974, husband-and-wife duo Lynn and Val Lewis decided to start their own business selling antiques from the back of a converted rubbish barge which floated on the Thames. In those early years, the most popular items were those which carried a nautical theme – and to begin with, the demand for such items was so great that there were not enough antiques around to satisfy it! Nauticalia was born.
Things reached a head when six buyers appeared at once for a single antique diver's helmet. It was then that Lyn struck upon the idea of enlisting a local metal works to create a series of replicas, and thus set into motion a business model which has spanned four decades and still going strong. The result of all this, more than forty years later, is the range of replica antiques you see here.
Included in this range are a number of exquisitely-crafting nautical instruments, ranging from barometers, clocks and porthole mirrors cast from brass and chrome, to smaller items like keyrings with miniature whistles and propellers attached. Here you’ll find the items required to lend a home that nautical look – or, indeed, to make a boat feel more like home. Take a look through our selection and you're sure to find something to appeal to someone with a love for all things maritime.
