John Lowrie Morrison, or ‘Jolomo’, as he’s more commonly known, is among the most popular landscape artists in Scotland. His work has found its way into homes across the country and beyond, and has been heartily endorsed by celebrities like Madonna, Sting and Rick Stein. As well as the paintings themselves, Jolomo’s work is ready available in various formats from The Square Peg whose range includes mugs, coasters, and trays, all bearing examples of Jolomo’s distinctive style.
When he was not teaching, Jolomo would paint obsessively. He would take photographs of landscapes he thought might make suitable fodder for his brush. He worked in a makeshift studio which would move throughout the family home and it was during this time that he would develop his unique style. Like his grandfather, Jolomo would work largely with water-colours during his early years. By the time he had taken up art full-time, however, he was working almost exclusively with oils.
Jolomo is famous at maintaining an astonishing workrate. His distinctive style, which marries broad strokes with bold colours, allows him to complete his paintings extremely quickly; he can create more than a hundred paintings in a single month – often working six-day weeks in order to do so. His product sells just as fast as he can paint it.
